If I recall right, this was (somewhat obliquely, as far as
_this_ leftpondonian is concerned) discussed when the term
'celtiboink' first appeared. I think we more or less tacitly
ignore Those particular overtones.
For what it's worth, around here "boink" is the little springy,
dingy sound you get when pushing buttons on various electronic
gadgets. Also, the sound of water dripping from the leaky tap
into the sink.
