It's essentially Turkish spoken by Shi'as who never have had anything to do
with Ataturk. Southern Azeri happens to be my father-in-law's native tongue
(he's from near Lake Urmia; he's actually a mix of Arab, Turkish, Armenian
and whatnot).

She may be from around Tabriz in NW Iran... anyway, you can get by speaking
most any Oghuz language -- not sure about Turkmen though.
