I'm actually trying for a situation where the front mid vowel is
predominantly /e/, with a selection of /E/ and /e:/ sprinkled into the
mix.
Part of my motivation comes from wanting to have something that feels
close to a balance within the /i/, /@/, /A/ vowel set and a separate
balance within the /e/, /o/ vowel set. Changing it to predominantly
/E/, /O/ with a few /E:/, /O:/ and /e/, /o/ could work just as well,
though /e/, /o/ are more common in Alg. languages than /E/, /O/, and
closer to the /i/, /u/ of Inuktitut.
Going over my changes (in the absence of hard frequency data for ON),
you might be on to something with /&/ > /E/, which might also imply
/&:/ > /E:/ (which breaks my symmetry) or /&:/ > /Ej/ (which actually
has a pretty good feel to it).
Thanks for the suggestions & advice, guys! Feel free to keep 'em coming!
