Not for people with "broad A" -- assuming the first word is "laugh", I
pronounce it "lahf" rather than "laff".
Perhaps a bit like "Spaß", which is still spelled that way after the
German spelling reform but under the new rules means that the vowel is
unambiguously long -- for those speakers of the standard dialect but
who nevertheless have a short vowel in that word, that word is now no
longer spelled phonemically.
