Thought you all might be interested in the fact that I
probably live in the Tibetan capital of North America.
This is mostly because of the Dalai Lama--his brother
is professor emeritus at the university (which has one
of the top programs in Tibetan, as well as Central
Eurasian languages in general), and his niece and
nephew run three Tibetan restaurants in town (three
Tibetan restaurants for 110,000 people--that's gotta
be some sort of ratio record). There are a small
monastery and a large cultural center. A couple of
years ago the Dalai Lama did a swing of speaking
engagements through the US. They were in New York,
Washington, Chicago, and Bloomington, Indiana (One of
these things is not like the other...).
