I like them both, but if I had to choose, I'd pick the ablaut-version.
(Thinking of question markers reminds me of my first encounter with
ANADEW. When I was 10 or so, I was inventing my first language, and I
thought it would be so neat if you could have a word at the end of a
sentence to indicate a question, instead of changing word order - a
sort of "verbal question mark" ... Little did I know... )
