It's mandatory in modern Greek - "I'm the Philip". And even "I believe
in the God".

I think more quaint than vulgar.
It's even occasionally used in the north - e.g. I might say "Hast du
die Karin schon gesehen?" or "Sag das mal dem Bernd" - though probably
not as frequently as in the south.
