Here's some advice from a semi-newbie who survived: ;-)

1) The Delete button is your good friend.
2) A threaded mail reader is your friend. Your very good friend. If you
   don't have such a friend yet, get one.
3) The Delete button is your good friend.
4) The Thread Delete button on a threaded mail reader is your saviour.
5) The Delete button is your good friend.
6) Speed-reading helps. I don't know it, but I'm sure it would help! :-P
7) Oh yes, did I mention that the Delete button is your good friend?
