Generally I use a bastardised mix of Kirschenbaum and SAMPA, ignoring the use of /&/ for ash, I have a funny keyboard setting and /æ/ is as easy to type as /a/. No idea about how easy it is to read, tho. I think æ is in the basic ASCII charset, so it should be easily viewably by everyone.
