The way I use the hyphen and what I intend by it in the word Irish-American is that although I am of Irish descent I am not an American who was born in Ireland. I feel that the term Irish American would be better suited to an Irishman or Irishwoman who later became an American citizen. To me (and of course this is completely subjective) Irish-American better connotes one who is American with Irish roots. In the main I identify myself as American. I only use the term Irish-American when someone is questioning my ethnic background and citizenship. At any rate I feel more allegiance to the planet as a whole than to any one political unit...which is not to say that I do not appreciate the benefits I enjoy here in the USA (warts and all).
