Hmm, probably a mixture of what you said and what John said, then. I'd
guess that it was probably based on homesigns. AFAIK, there's not much
French-like grammar to it, which would, I'd think, be the case if it was
totally invented. In fact, I'd think that he'd've attempted to make it
a sort of "Exact Signed French".
