Try this (I'm using a Spanish version of Word 97 so the names of the options could be different) write your ae ligature as you already knows chose Insert | Symbols... and a dialog is openned In the Symbols tab chose Diacritics in the Subset combo. Chose the tilde. This should work in most complete fonts, like Times New Roman or Arial if you have a complete instalation of Word. It would probably not work whit some incomplete fonts like Commic Sans MS.
