Norwegian proverb

A Lutheran acquaintance of mine has this proverb on her wall, but knows not
what it means:

G/O)jestfrihe(i/t) er husets smykke;
Kjarlighet er hjemmets lykke.
What does it mean? My attempt:
Guestfreedom is the house's smoke;
Charcoallight is the home's light.
"commune id vitium est, hic vivimus ambitiosa
paupertate"
"this is our common fault; here we live in ostentatious poverty"
