...and then I hear (mostly Republicans?) people talk about state rights
and so on, and I think, isn't that kind of feudal? OTOH most of the
history I've taken is pre-1500, so my perspective is warped.

I'm Texan and I definitely don't feel that way, and I even spent 1/3 of
my life there.
