Basically yes, I'd say. What you describe sounds to me like a retroflex tongue-
position pushed as much as possible, maybe due to the lateral origin of the
sound. Still, i don't think that it can be marked with IPA or that other people
would hear it differently from a normal rhotic vowel. Or at least this is my
opinion. Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know...
