When I took a class in German dialects oh so many years ago, we used the
dtv-Atlas zur deutschen Sprache (Deutscher Taschenbuch Verlag) which has maps
and such, and a very thick course reader, which I might still have somewhere.
I'd start with the Atlas, though.
