It's the ISO 3166 country code for Niue - a small island in the South
Pacific; self-governing in free association with New Zealand. Between
Tonga and the Cook Islands. Niuean is a Polynesian language most
closely related to Tongan. There are about 1500 Niueans on the island
(probably fewer now as a hundred or more have left the island after
hurricane Heta caused a lot of damage at the beginning of the year),
and about ten times that number(!) of Niueans in New Zealand.
Niue lets anyone register domain names under the .nu domain name;
revenue from this is an important source of income, and has let the
Internet Users Society - Niue let every Niuean on the island have free
access to the Internet via dial-up (and they were planning to have
WLAN access available across the island as well).
It's also, apparently, the Swedish word for "now", which may explain
the popularity of the .nu domain in Sweden.
Cheers,
