My impression is that they do, but they have equally bad understanding of
it in general. FWIW, my German teacher told me one time that he had
spoken to his mother on the phone back in Germany and was telling her
about what he was doing at work. We had been doing dative and genitive
case then, and when he told her about this, she was completely mystified.
