Yes, and that's exactly what I mean. Your /E/ (and Italian /E/) is slightly more open than mine.

Well, the IPA was designed to distinguish phonemes *within* a language. It doesn't
say anything about their real phonetic
value. So the argument about middle values is kinda lost.
