If it's the huge, rare New Zealand flightless nocturnal parrot you mean (Kakapo literally means 'night parrot') then its call is a strange resonant booming sound that carries for miles. I'm unsure how it makes this sound - possibly inflating a pouch in the throat?? The Kea, or mountain parrot (held in affection by all New Zealanders except farmers and skiers) has a very wide repertoire of calls - the most frequently heard cry suggests its name is onomatopoeic.
