If it's the huge, rare New Zealand flightless nocturnal parrot you mean
(Kakapo literally means 'night parrot') then its call is a strange resonant
booming sound that carries for miles. I'm unsure how it makes this sound -
possibly inflating a pouch in the throat?? The Kea, or mountain parrot (held
in affection by all New Zealanders except farmers and skiers) has a very
wide repertoire of calls - the most frequently heard cry suggests its name
is onomatopoeic.
