Actually, it has been used among blacks in that way for WELL over 30
years. Among the kids in my generation and younger (at least in these
very muticultural parts), it already pretty much means 1) male person, 2)
friend, 3) black person (used by black people) 4) any person (used by
black people). This has gotten to the point where you'll hear such things
as "it was a white nigga" (white male) or "that Peurto-Rican nigga", etc.
I even have a future-English conlang where man is /nig@/ and woman is
/bitS@/. Anyway...
