I live near the Salinas Valley in California, which has very large numbers
of Spanish speakers. Many are farmworkers, and many only speak Spanish.
For most who own businesses, it's becomming almost manditory that they
learn Spanish so they can communicate better with their employees.
Though, i've noticed a lot of employers still hire supervisors who speak
Spanish, and the main manager speaks to the workers through them. As we
gain more Spanish speakers here in the western US, I think that it will
become important for anyone working with large numbers of Spanish only
speakers to learn the language. In fact, my school system, the California
State University system, is starting to make foreign languages a
requirement for graduation (my specific school has it as a requirement - 3
semesters of language. Unfortunately some people see it as a "waste of
time").
