The book we used in our first descriptive linguistics class in Leyden=20
was
D=FCrr, Michael and Peter Schlobinski. 1990. _Einf=FChrung in die
deskriptive Linguistik_. Opladen: Westdeutscher Verlag.
It's similarly priced to TYL, I think - German books are often
remarkably cheap, especially if you count Reklam in! It's a good
book, but won't help someone who wants to discuss linguistics
in English a whole lot.
