AFAIK, the gerund is more adverbial in its use. English is a bit misleading in
that. But the use in Latin makes it much clearer: the infinitive is used only
in the nominative or accusative cases, the gerund in any other case, including
after prepositions. Also, an infinitive has usually a single form, whatever the
case it's used in, while a gerund changes form with case.
Of course, those definitions are only what I learned. They tend to change from
language to language.
