In Denmark, they frequently aren't. I can't even remember the word for a
dryer. (Ok, I can't remember the word for a lot of things nowadays, but
there's a *reason* I can't remember the word for a dryer.) I lived with
five different families, and only one of them had a hot-air dryer to tumble
the clothes dry in. The rest of them used laundry lines outdoors, although
one if the families had a sauna with laundry lines strung across it, and we
would go and hang the clothes in the sauna when the weather turned damp.
