I think it probably popped up in the 19th century or so. The historic form is "dive-dived".

As far as *I* am concerned, your Romulans are *the* Romulans. (For the rest of you, the relevant titles are _My Enemy, My Ally_ and _The Romulan Way_). A brilliantly retconned conculture.
