It was actually the older form. Historically, _ask_ is a metathesis of
_aks_ ... which in turn was a metathesis of Old English _ascian_ (which
in that form evolved into the obsolete MidEng for _asshe_). So, in short,
ascian -> acsian -> aks -> ask
-> asshe -> (obsolete)
