Several years ago, I did some computer contract work for a
company in Columbus, Ohio. My co-workers suggested a new
fast-food place that had just opened down the street. They called
it [tSIpAtl], as did I.
Then about a year ago, Subway came out with a sandwich called
the "Chipotle Chicken" which had "Chipotle" sauce on it. On the
television advertisements, everyone pronounced it [tSIpolti], and
now everyone I know pronounces the word that way.
So what is the correct pronunciation of "Chipotle"?
