Could your mail reader be interpreting text as HTML? I've been using the
greater-than and less-than signs to represent the angle brackets that
delimit characters of the language's writing system. HTML interprets these
as tags that affect the formatting of text, among other things. So if I
want to mention the letter "i", it would put all the following text in
italics if I write it as [greater than] i [less than]! I guess I'll have to
start using curly braces { } instead.
