Unlikely. Probably just the nearest foreign language.
ObJoke (set somewhere in Europe):
A group of obvious tourists are talking together in Italian. Another
group comes up to them, and one of the second group (B) begins speaking to
a member of the first group (A) in Spanish.
A (surprised, in Italian): Why are you talking to me in Spanish, when I'm
speaking Italian?
B (in Spanish): I don't speak Italian. Don't you understand me?
A (in Italian) Not so well. (in French) Do you speak French?
B (in bad French) I don't speak French. (in German) How about German?
A (still in French) I don't speak German. (back to Italian) You speak
German and Spanish? Tell me, where are you from?
B (back to Spanish) We are from the United States.
A (in English) We're from New York!
