"The geographic origin of the different species of genus Citrus is
largely obscured by early cultivation," to semiquote one source.
(Might be Britannica).
The citron/lemon is maybe from Iran, the orange from China.

C. medica --- probably a less cultivated form of the lemon. Mostly
rind, no juice, very sour. The peel (only) is edible in jams or
candied in cakes. As such interchangeable with pomelo peel.
See http://rimmo.mur.csu.edu.au/Plantnames/Sorting/Citrus_1.html and
the next two pages (linked near the top of the first), for more than
you need to know about the species and cultivars of genus Citrus.
