I've heard that the "Golden Snitch" is a reference to the German phrase
"Der Goldene Schnitt", which is the German name of this number! Of
course, it could be a coincidence, but I wouldn't be surprised if it
came up somewhere in all the research on alchemy that J.K. Rowling must
have done.
It could have rhythmic implications for a language -- the duration of
long vs. short syllables, for instance. The golden section makes a nice
"swing" rhythm.
