I suspect that they would tend to merge in some way.  Either the two
groups will come to share suffixes so that they both mark tense *and*
aspect, or the categories in one will be redefined to fit the other,
e.g., perfect -> past or vice versa.  That doesn't *seem* to me to be a
stable system, but who knows, I might be wrong.  :-)
