When I'm speaking Dutch, I call them "friet" or "frietjes" (though some people, and most snack bars, call them "patat"). The thin crunchy things are "chips". When I'm speaking English, it's "chips" and "crisps" respectively, but I learned most of my colloquial English in Salisbury (Wiltshire, not former-Rhodesia-now-Zimbabwe).
