Turkic is a member of Altaic. At least, that's one of the dozen
classifications around.

Not only are there so many families, there are so many proposals for the
exact same families. Once you get out of the really common languages groups
like Uralic, Indo-European, and Semitic (probably a few others too), you
get too many competeing proposals to make sense of them all without be a
specialist.
