Anakin was that age in early drafts of the screenplay, but Lucas felt
a child that old wouldn't find separation from his mother traumatic
enough.

Lucas has been hinting that he wants an unknown who's very athletic
for the adult Anakin. The trailer for _The Beach_ should be all
that's needed to discourage anyone from thinking Di Caprio would meet
the latter qualification. <eg>
Besides, Lucas has already turned down one performer who was
campaigning for the Jar-Jar part because having a superstar involved
would be too distracting. (The disappointed performer was Michael
Jackson.)
