Dialing? Dialing? Sioux Falls SD, mah home town, only got dial phones about
50 years ago. One had 4 digits, actually 5 but you didn't have to dial the
first one (since there was only one exchange at the time). But it meant
that the NNN family had to give up their treasured number 1, the local
laundry/dry cleaners could no longer advertise "Just Phone 4".
Before that, of course, one gave the desired number to a real person and she
(always she) plugged you in. How quaint.
