Two factors here: Academic salaries are ridiculously low all over the
world, and consultants have to carry much more of the overhead
themselves.
Just to give a non-US example, the average gross hourly pay of an IT
professional in Danmark is $30.
But consultants hiring themselves out on log-term contracts (two
months or more) usually charge 3 to 4 times that. (Plus sales tax). If
it's less than a full week, 5 times is normally the lower limit.
Urgent jobs, inconvenient hours, or high-demand skills bring it up
further. Two hour minimum, too.
The highest I've encountered was the rate for a Digital field engineer
when we didn't have a support contract: $500/hour. And that was quite
some years ago, Compaq may be charging $800 now.
