This thread recalls for me a query that the editors of Proceedings of the Institute of Radio
Engineers sent to the Soviet embassy around 1955 about the correct spelling of the name of
the mathematician: Chebyshev or Tschebyshev. The answer came back that the only correct
spelling would use Cyrillic; no transliteration, whether the French or the German, qualified
as 'correct'! The editors printed the correspondence in the magazine later that year.
