I could see it happening in in English, too:
From 'direct /dairEct/' to 'drept /drEpt]
/dairEct/ > /d@rEct/ > /drEct/ > /drE?/ > /drEp_}/
Incidentally, I'm sure I've said(or have heard) all but the last, and the
last is a pretty possible transformation, as /?/ can pretty much turn into
anything, depending on the surrounding vowels.
