I don't see why *most* tonal langs can be viewed as having stress beside
tones. In some, the position of stress is phonemically significant.
IMO the Mandarin system can be interpreted this way. Different types of
(historical) compounds can have different stress patterns. It seems that
tonic and pretonic syllables always differentiate tones, posttonic
syllables mostly don't (or never do?).
