I did a google search for the plurals, and got these results:
i principi 288,000
i principi * 227,000
i principii 118,000
gli inizi 199,000
gli inizi * 35,700
gli inizii 1,400
I don't know whether the count for "i principii" was included in the count
for "in principi" or not. That's why I did the asterisk search.
For these two words, at least, the plural with one 'i' seems more common.
