It goes Left to right. Top to bottom can be done, but usually only in
vertical surfaces (it's also a bit harder to read since sometimes vowel
diacritics can get confused as to which glyph they belong (particularly u,
if the line isn't drawn long enough it can be confused for the vowel
killer.

Thanks! In the calligraphic form, aesthetics takes over from usual lay
out. Form is generally what pleases the artist. And sometimes it gets
confusing as to what the word is.
