Ukrainian pronunciation question

Ukrainian friend of mine says that the Ukrainian letter И (Russian
|i|, looks like a backwards N) is pronounced the same as the Russian
letter Ы (looks like |bl|) - that is, as [1]. But I found a
Ukrainian alphabet guide in X-SAMPA
(http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/encyclopedia/u/uk/ukrainian_alphabet.htm)
which says that И is [I]. So if someone on here could clarify, I'd
appreciate it.
