Thirty million Californians can't imagine anything else. I had to
learn, as a pedestrian, not to so much as stick my toe onto the roadbed
until the light had changed, or all adverse traffic would come to a
screeching halt. For a New Yorker (= habitual jaywalker), that's
difficult and a little frightening.
