With all due respect, I don't think the comparison holds much sense.
I'm not particularly standing on the barricades to defend my star,
but where the swastika has a very distinct connotation (Nazi
Germany), the star is a very general symbol, used in all kinds of
environments. My star is supposed to be both non-political and
non-religious.

Yeah, but then: would the casual American observer immediately
interpret your hieroglyph as a symbol for language?

I agree, and that is exactly what I was trying to do! As I said, my
skills are limited and the tools available here at work even more so.
I tried mounting in Christian's sun-with-glyph into my own picture
and failed. But if someone else can do it for me, I'd be grateful.
And that would probably be my preferred solution (although I'd feel
very sorry for my star ;) .
