"growing" a conlang

Hi,

Have people out there experimented with "growing" a
language semi-naturally?  (or should I ask "how many
people have?)  I mean, getting together with at least
one cooperative person, not talking in any real common
language you may have, and working up communication
from scratch?  I assume that whatever would come out
would be pretty strongly influenced by the native
languages of the speakers, but I'd really like to see
what could result.
