There is something to the theory that one of the reasons 12 tone Equal
Temperament is so prevalent is due to the Industrial Revolution & the
processes of mass-production (the other factors are, of course, cultural
colonialism & cultural imperialism).
The late composer/instrument-builder Lou Harrison was much opposed to
Equal Temperament, preferring to use various & many Just Intonation scale
tunings, esp'ly scales based on Indonesian _Pelog_ & _Slendro_ as well as
many East Asian pentatonics.
There is so much one can do in a ConCulture with music "outside" 12 tone
Equal Temperament (12tET).
