Definitely real, as a quick google shows. We have Andrew M. the tenor,
Ruth M. the genealogist, George W. M. III the lawyer, Vernon M. the
composer, Bryan M. the cricketer (from Namibia), and a page saying
that M. is a Yorkshire surname derived from a place name.
