Some kind of dissimilation, I guess. Salisbury also had
an /r/ until ME times; the Latin form was Sorviodunum.
Oddly, Scrobbescir became Shropshire, but Scrobbesbyrig became
Shrewsbury!
"Salop" was official in the 1970s, but was changed back to Shropshire
"owing to the protests of the inhabitants".
Note also "pilgrim", It. "pellegrino" < Latin PEREGRINUS.
